Women's soccer repeats as NEAC Champs

READING, PA (November 9, 2014) - Lizzie Mummau netted three second half goals to guide the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Penn State Abington in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon.

This is the second straight NEAC Women's Soccer Championship title and they will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament. Mummau was named the NEAC Tournament MVP after recording five goals - two game winners - over the weekend.

The Nittany Lions (18-2), for the second straight contest, controlled the first half but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. The team kept chipping away and were able to break through for a goal just over three minutes into the second half. Ellie McKinstry sent a free kick in front of the net and Mummau leaped up and deflected the ball with her hip into the back far corner.

Taylor Schwartz's precise passes led to assists on the final two goals by Mummau. In the 68th minute, Schwartz passed the ball through traffic and Mummau redirected the ball past the keeper. In the 79th minute, Schwartz flopped the ball over the defense and deep into Abington territory. The keeper came out, but not in time as Mummau easily chipped it over the keepers head and into the back of the net.

The defensive play by Dana Sarcinello at midfield and the back row of Emily Rumpf, Katie Warner, Caitlin Deibler, and Brennan Moyer did not allow many scoring chances for Abington. Abington managed seven shots, two of which were on net.

Savannah Cramer finished the contest with one save. Her bid for a shutout was dashed with 20 seconds remaining in the contest after an accidental hand ball in the box led to a penalty kick. Mallory Mugnier converted the PK with a low liner into the left-hand side of the net.

After the intermission, midfielders Sarcinello, Schwartz, Jen Kessler, and Ellie McKinstry all played at high level which allowed Berks to control possession and the game.

Amanda Garber and Morgan Shade provided significant time off the bench. Garber nearly tacked on a fourth goal in the 85th minute, but the shot banged off of the cross bar. Shade played strong defense and it allowed Moyer to move up and solidify the midfield.

Chrissy Smith suffered some bad breaks throughout the game. She had four shots - three on goal - the off target shot trickled just wide of the open left side.

The Nittany Lions will find out what regional site they will be going to and who the opponent will be in the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, November 10 at 1 p.m.
