Nittany Lions drop heartbreaker in NCAA Regional

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 15, 2014) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team was dealt a tough 3-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (18-3) played an to an even 0-0 contest in the first half against CMU, who is ranked sixth in the nation. The Tartans (15-2) held a 6-1 advantage in shots in the opening half and a had a 4-1 margin on corner kicks.

Megan Bartoshuk broke through for a goal in the 57 minute and Savina Reid built a 2-0 cushion with a header off of a corner kick by Amanda Broderick at the 65:20 mark of the game. The final tally came with just 1:01 remaining in the match.

For the second straight season, the Nittany Lions season came to a close in a hard fought battle with a nationally ranked team. The Nittany Lions lost 2-0 to The College of New Jersey last season and were tied 0-0 at half time in that contest as well.

Caitlin Deibler gave one of the greatest performances of her career in the biggest game of her career. She missed last year's regional contest, but made up for it in a big way this season. She had never played significant time on the back line growing up or even in college until she was moved there in a game against Lancaster Bible College on September 15. That would be shocking news to everyone in attendance on Saturday, because it looked like she had played the position her entire career.

Deibler was all over the field, clearing out headers when defending corner kicks, winning headers at the midfield off the opposing keeper kicks. She raced down loose balls before the attacking forward could get to them.

She was not alone with the solid defensive effort. Seniors Emily Rumpf and Katie Warner gave it everything they had knowing that their playing career in college was coming to a close at any time. Brennan Moyer and Morgan Shade also helped keep the very athletic Tartan offense in check.

Savannah Cramer finished the contest with six saves. In addition, she made several key plays of coming out of net and defending a cross or picking up a pass that came into the 18. Cramer finished the season with 56 saves.

Dana Sarcinello had both shots for the Nittany Lions, but was able to find the back of the net. Chrissy Smith and Lizzie Mummau each dribbled deep into Tartan territory a couple of times, but the defense toughened up. CMU has only allowed six goals and only 43 shots on goal this season.

The loss brings an end to the amazing careers held by Cramer, Warner, and Rumpf. Cramer and Warner have been four-year members, while Rumpf enjoyed three successful season. The trio has been a part of three regular season NEAC titles, two NEAC Tournament Championships, and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. They all rank among the top-10 in many categories in the record book and will go down as three of the top players in program-history.

The 2014 squad set every single-season offensive record in program history. That includes points (321), goals (122), assists (77), shots (596), and shots on goal (331). In addition, they have the school record for wins (18), shutouts (14), and games played (21). This squad leads all of Division III in points per game (6.10), (122), and total points (321). They rank in the top 15 in the nation in assists, win percentage, and shutouts.
