Women's soccer blanks Wildcats in semifinal round

READING, PA (November 8, 2014) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team downed SUNY Polytechnic Institute, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon to earn its third straight appearance in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship.

The Nittany Lions (17-2), who have been off since October 25, came out look every bit like a team that had not played in 14 days. Berks outshot the Wildcats (9-10-2) by a 10-1 margin in the first half, but they had nothing to show for it with a the game scoreless at halftime.

Lizzie Mummau finally broke through with a goal in the 53rd minute. Chrissy Smith provided the assist on the play.

Berks was clinging to a 1-0 lead over the next 15 minutes before Dana Sarcinello added some breathing room with a goal at the 67:51 mark of the game. Brennan Moyer set up the scoring opportunity with a deep pass over the defense.

Smith sent a line drive from the right side of the box over the keepers head, but the ball sailed high and caromed off the cross bar. Mummau came flying in the left side of the box and tapped the rebound into the wide open near corner to put Berks up 3-0.

Sarcinello finished off the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 88th minute. Sarcinello leads the team in goals with 21, followed by Mummau with 20.

Moyer, Caitlin Deibler, Emily Rumpf, and Katie Warner played strong defense and limited the Wildcats to just two total shots and one on goal. Savannah Cramer was able to make the save on that one shot that got past the defense. Cramer earned her sixth shutout of the season and it was the 14th time this season Berks blanked its opposition.

The Nittany Lions will face Penn State Abington in the championship round on Sunday, November 9 at 1 p.m. The two teams squared off in the championship last season, with Berks winning by a 4-0 margin.
