Nittany Lions advance to NEAC semifinal

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 7, 2014) - Sophia Zhang had a career-day to help lead the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over SUNY Polytechnic Institution in the opening round of the 2014 NEAC Women's Volleyball Championship on Friday night at Gallaudet University.

The Nittany Lions (19-9) trailed 24-21 in the opening game, but came storming back out of a time out with five straight points to capture a 26-24 win. The Wildcats (16-19) squeezed out a 25-23 win in the second game to even it at 1-all. Berks took control with a 25-11 win in the third and finished off the contest by a 25-19 score in the clincher.

Zhang had a career-high and matched a program record with 26 kills. The sophomore outside hitter, who was recently named to the All-NEAC First Team, committed only five errors on 51 attempts to finish with a .412 hitting percentage. Zhang, along with three other teammates, notched 15 digs.

Megan DeAbreu, who was named NEAC Defensive Player of the Year, had a team-high 17 digs and the team finished with 73. Zhang, Cassidy Schultz, and Jordan Heath all followed with 15 digs. Schultz also added 12 kills to notch a double-double. Heath handed out 50 assists, which is one off of her single game-high and is the third most in program history.

Heleanna Davison notched six kills, four solo blocks and one block assist, while Maria Pavone added five kills, two solo blocks, and one block assist.

The Nittany Lions have reached the semifinal round of the NEAC Championship for the fifth straight year. They will face No. 2 seed Wells College at 2 p.m. and the winner will advance to the championship on Sunday afternoon.
