Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nittany Lions rally comes up short against Stevenson

READING, PA (November 25, 2014) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team erased a 15-point deficit midway through the second half and were able to square the contest at 60-all with 7:02 left in regulation. Stevenson University was able to get a few baskets and made its foul shots down to stretch to sink Berks 72-64 on Tuesday evening at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed 40-29 at halftime and were down 15 with 15:59 left in the second half. Berks never gave up and went on a 25-15 run that was capped off with an off balanced jumper by Christian Burggraf to even the game at 60-60. During that eight minute stretch, Baba Waples hit two 3's and collected 10 points, while Michael Aldridge recorded three blocked shots, three rebounds, and two points.

Waples finished the game with a career-high 16 points and three assists. Aldridge finished with six rebounds (three offensive, three defensive) and four points. Nygel Belizaire, who matched a career-high with 12 points, had several offensive moves that put all of the Berks fans on their feet. With 5:40 left in the first half, the sophomore forward weaved past two defenders and made an acrobatic layup and was fouled in the process. He went to the line and finished off the old fashioned three-point play. Belizaire got crowded going crazy with a one-handed dunk on a fast break led by Dameon Nixon with 59 seconds left until intermission.

Burggraf tallied 15 points, four rebounds, three steals, and thee assists. With 9:03 left in regulation, Burggraf stepped up into front of a defender and knocked down a deep 3 in his face to cut the deficit to 10 points.

Jalen Flynn had eight points, two assists and two steals. After Berks tied the game, Trevor Ford had a clutch steal that gave the Nittany Lions an opportunity at their first lead of the game.

The Mustangs (4-1) received 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor by Erik Fisher. The junior forward was able to work his down low and did not take any shots more than four feet from the basket. Christian Roberts also turned in a strong performance with 18 points, powered by a 9-for-11 effort at the foul line.

One of the major advantages for Stevenson was a 18-for-26 performance at the foul line, while Berks converted 12 on just 18 attempts. The Nittany Lions kept control of the ball and committed only 12 turnovers and forced the Mustangs into 20.

Although the outcome was not what Berks was looking for, the effort and fight was something that the team can build off of as they prepare to open up conference play. The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Wednesday, December 3 at 7 p.m.
