Women's volleyball completes impressive comeback

READING, PA (September 30, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to earn a thrilling 3-2 victory over Delaware Valley College in a non-conference contest on Monday evening at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Aggies (8-7) earned an easy 25-14 win in the first game and were cruising to another lopsided victory in the second game. Berks trailed 24-14 before reeling off seven straight points, but could not complete the comeback in a 25-21 loss. Although not the outcome they were looking for, the Nittany Lions (6-5) gained momentum and lots of confidence heading into the third set. Berks took that 25-16 and pulled out a gritty 25-22 victory to force the decisive fifth set.

The fifth set was a back-and-forth battle that saw Delaware Valley at match point with a 14-12 lead and holding the serve. But again, the Nittany Lions were resilient and pulled off 17-15 win. Heleanna Davison recorded one of her program-best seven solo blocks to break a 15-15 tie and set Berks up for the win.

Davison also added eight kills and two block assists as she also set the school record for total blocks with nine. Sophia Zhang crushed 21 kills to lead the Nittany Lion offensive attack, marking the third time this season that she had 20 or more kills. Cassidy Schultz added 11 kills and 18 digs.

Jordan Heath handed out 44 assists, which is one of her season-high and registered a personal-best 15 digs. Morgan Buterbaugh recorded 34 of the Nittany Lions 99 team digs. Colby Jones contributed 16 digs to the team total and also had a team-high three service aces.

Maria Pavone was instrumental in the Nittany Lions win in the third game with several clutch serves down the stretch. For the match, Pavone had five kills, two service aces, and three total blocks.

The impressive comeback win from a 2-0 hole is the second time in program history for the Nittany Lions. The other occurrence was nearly a year to the day when they outlasted DeSales University on October 3, 2012. After the epic comeback last year, the Nittany Lions turned the season around and went on to win 9 of the next 10 matches, a similar boost the 2013 squad is hoping to take from the win.

The Nittany Lions will host Susquehanna University on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
