Nittany Lions play to 1-all draw with Alvernia

READING, PA (September 25, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team played to a 1-all draw against regionally ranked Alvernia University in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon. (Boxscore)

Both teams finished the contest with 18 total shots and nine on goal. The Crusaders, who are ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

After a scoreless first half, Jen Kessler sent a perfect pass to Simone Stewart over the Alvernia defense to set up the first goal of the match. Stewart took a shot from the left side of the box that flew past the keeper and into the back right corner 48th minute. The Crusaders (7-1-1) evened the contest at 1-1 with a goal by Kelsey Gill off of a corner kick by Bailey Stover.

The two teams had a number of scoring opportunities come up short throughout the match. Gill almost put Alvernia on the board 48 seconds into the match, but her shot drilled straight off the crossbar. Gill was again denied a goal when her shot from beyond the box hit off of the far post in the 88th minute. In overtime, Melissa Bennett came flying out of nowhere to make a sliding save right at the goal line on a wide open shot by Laura Mauroschadt.

Berks had two shots in overtime by Lizzie Mummau sail just wide of the goal and a double overtime shot by Ellie McKinstry fly just over the crossbar. Dana Sarcinello sent a low kick toward the left corner, but the keeper made a diving save to keep the match going in the 104th minute.

Savannah Cramer finished the contest with seven saves, while Colleen Maher made eight stops for Alvernia. The defensive unit of Bennett, Mummau, Emily Rumpf, and Katie Warner played solid for all 110 minutes and kept the Crusader attack under control.

The Nittany Lions will travel to SUNYIT for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m. They will then face SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday at 2 p.m.
