Stewart nets game winner with 1.9 seconds remaining

LANCASTER, PA (September 23, 2013) – Simone Stewart scored with 1.9 seconds left in regulation to lift the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Monday afternoon. (Boxscore)

After the final 1.9 seconds ticked off the clock, the 4-foot-11 Stewart found herself at the bottom of a massive team pile. But it was all worth it as the Nittany Lions improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC, while LBC falls to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Stewart scored her first goal of the afternoon in the 30th minute after a shot by Cristen French was deflected by a Chargers defender. Stewart collected the rebound and put a shot into side netting to put Berks ahead 1-0.

LBC was able to even the match at 1-all when Monica Horning, the reigning NEAC Player of the Year, scored off of a cross by Evelyn Stauffer in the 70th minute.

As time wound down, it appeared the rematch of 2012 NEAC Championship would be heading to extra time to find a winner. Lizzie Mummau had a throw-in - with about seven seconds on the clock - that went to Dana Sarcinello who then directed the ball to Stewart. The freshman ripped a shot past the keeper through the left-hand side to record her third game winning goal of the season. Stewart had her second multi-goal game and now leads the team with six goals scored.

Goalkeeper Savannah Cramer recorded five saves, while Chargers' keeper Kaitlyn Scheuing registered nine stops. Berks outshot the Chargers by a 16-6 margin in the second half and held a 25-9 advantage for the match.

The Nittany Lions will host Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, September 25 at 4 p.m.
