Women's volleyball wins NEAC opener over Wells



MARCY, N.Y. (September 20, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a 3-1 victory over Wells College on Friday evening at Wildcat Field House on the campus of SUNYIT. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (4-3, 1-0 NEAC) won 25-20 in the opener and 25-18 in the second game, before falling 18-25 in the third. Berks wrapped up the victory with a 25-21 win in the clinching game.

Sophia Zhang and Cassidy Schultz combined for 29 kills to lead the Nittany Lion offensive attack. Zhang recorded a contest-high 17 kills, giving her a total of 64 over the last three matches.

Berks had four players record double digit digs as the team collected a total of 85. Morgan Buterbaugh and Colby Jones each had 22 digs, followed by Jordan Heath with 16 and 12 from Schultz. Heath also handed out 40 assists. Maria Pavone added five kills, four service aces, two solo blocks, and two block assists. Heleanna Davison chipped in eight kills, three solo blocks, and two block assists.

The Nittany Lions will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against host SUNYIT, followed by a 12 p.m. contest with Morrisville State College.
