Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Nittany Lions fall in 5 to Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, PA (September 18, 2013) - Sophia Zhang turned in another strong effort, but it was not enough as the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team fell 3-2 to Ursinus College on Wednesday evening at Helfferich Hall. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (3-3) took the first game 25-18 and were leading late in the second before falling by a score of 28-26. Berks won 25-22 in the third match and made a late rally in the fourth that came up short from clinching the match. Trailing 22-14 in game four, the Nittany Lions pulled to match even at 23-all before dropping the next two points. Ursinus then took the decisive game by a score of 15-8.

Zhang, coming off of a 24 kill performance against Wilkes University, recorded 23 kills while committing just four errors on 51 attempts. The freshman outside hitter earned just 25 kills through the first three contests of the season, but after her recent hot streak has raised the season total 72.

Maria Pavone had eight kills, while Cassidy Schultz and Heleanna Davison each chipped in seven.

The Nittany Lions combined for 98 digs as Morgan Buterbaugh (34), Schultz (25), and Jordan Heath (13) each had career-highs in that category. Heath handed out 43 assists, which were two away from her season-high that she recorded on Monday against Wilkes.

Berks will travel to Utica, New York this weekend for the start of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) schedule. They will face Wells College on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m., followed by host SUNYIT on Saturday at 10 a.m. The NEAC Crossover will be completed with Berks taking on Morrisville State College at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
