Women's soccer drops tilt to Rowan University

GLASSBORO, N.J. (September 17, 2013) – The Penn State Berks women's soccer team held tough against NJAC powerhouse Rowan University in a 6-1 loss on Tuesday evening at Rowan Soccer Complex. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (3-2) struck first with a goal by Dana Sarcinello at the 12:26 mark of the first half. The Profs (6-1) evened the contest in the 19th minute and went ahead 2-1 with a score at the 31:47 mark.

Trailing 2-1 out of the intermission, the Nittany Lions surrendered an early second half goal but were not out of striking distance. The contest was played more evenly than the score indicates as the two teams played back-and-forth soccer with the ball staying mostly in the midfield for most of the second half until a pair of goals by Rowan came 24 seconds apart during the 79th minute.

Goalkeeper Savannah Cramer finished the contest with a season-high nine saves against a Profs team that is currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA/Continental Tire South Atlantic poll. Cramer was tested with several one-on-one breakaways and came away with a couple of diving saves to keep the Nittany Lions in the game.

The Nittany Lions ran out of gas down the stretch as seven players were on the field for the entire game, while Rowan was able to rotate its lineup with 11 players off the bench.

The Rowan defense – which has only allowed two goals this season – was tested on close scoring opportunities by Simone Stewart, Jen Kessler, Caitlin Deibler, and Lizzie Mummau.

The Nittany Lions will get back into NEAC play with a road match at Penn State Abington on Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m.
