Women's soccer downs Albright College in season opener

READING, PA (August 31, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team picked up right where it left off last season with an impressive 2-1 victory over Albright College on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) picked up their first-ever victory over Albright and won in the season-opener for the time since 2009. Berks controlled the contest and spent the majority of the match in the Lions (0-2) territory. The Nittany Lions held the advantage in shots (13-6) and corner kicks (5-2).

Cristen French got the Nittany Lions on the scoreboard with a chip shot over the keepers head from 20-yards out in the 34th minute. The play was set up when Dana Sarcinello headed the ball past a group of Albright defenders.

Simone Stewart tacked on another goal early in the second half when she sent a volley over the keepers head into the back right corner of the cage. Sarcinello won possession of the ball in the middle of the field and chipped a pass over the top of the Albright defense to the on-running Stewart to set up the goal.

Albright was able to cut the Nittany Lions lead in half with a goal from Mel Sullivan in the 88th minute. The Berks offense ramped up after that with a series of strong scoring opportunities in the closing minutes. Jen Kessler ripped a line drive that deflected off the cross bar.

The defensive unit of Katie Warner, Melissa Bennett, Emily Rumpf, and Lizzie Mummau silenced the Albright offense throughout the contest, which left reigning NEAC Goalkeeper of the Year Savannah Cramer with little action.

The Nittany Lions will travel to King's College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 4 at 7 p.m.
