Baseball splits road doubleheader with SUNYIT

MARCY, N.Y. (April 7, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team won by a score of 6-2 in the opener against SUNYIT before letting a lead slip away in a 9-7 defeat in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (6-15, 2-2 NEAC) scored all six of their runs in the final four innings to pull out the win in the opener. Ryan Tantala scattered seven hits and allowed two runs in 5.0 innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season. He also struck out a season-high four batters. Mason Mecke allowed just one hit in two innings of scoreless relief to earn his first career save.

The Wildcats (7-9, 2-2 NEAC) got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third inning, but Berks countered with two runs in the top of the fourth. Christian Marcin walked to lead off the inning and scored when Nick Vitelli hit his first home run of the season.

Berks put up run in the fifth inning when Keeanu Erb led off with a single, moved up to second on a hit by Phil Anderson and scored on a Wildcat error. They put in another run the same way in the sixth inning when Clinton Faust singled and eventually scored after another SUNYIT miscue. The Nittany Lions tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with Dillon Landrigan and Faust each driving in a run.

Marcin led off the second game with his first home run of the season to give Berks an early lead. Faust and Brad Dierolf each drove in a run in the third to build a 3-0 cushion.

But the wheels fell off in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Wildcats put up an 8-spot. The Nittany Lions got back in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the margin to 8-6. Tom Grablewski, Kyle Rissmiller, and Erb each recorded an RBI in that inning.

Grablewski picked up another RBI in the top of the seventh to pull Berks within two runs, but Fred Morine was able to end the game without allowing any more damage to earn the save. M.J. Hajec earned the mound victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Nittany Lions will take a break from NEAC action with a home game against Moravian College on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
