Early lead slips away in Nittany Lions loss

READING, PA (April 10, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team scored six runs in the third inning to take an early 6-4 lead. But Moravian College responded with eight unanswered runs to pick up a 12-6 victory in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference contest at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame, but Berks battled back with six runs in the bottom of the third. Moravian chipped at that lead with one run in the top of the fifth and then combined for seven runs in seventh and eighth innings to earn the win.

Brad Dierolf went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Nittany Lion offensive attack. Allen Mendenhall was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Christian Marcin added an RBI triple.

John Bonino surrendered just one run on two hits in three effective innings of relief. Elias Manzueta was able to shutdown Moravian's offense with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Alex Bull led the Greyhounds attack with three hits and four RBI, followed by Charles Savite with three hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Chris Lansberry also recorded three and scored a contest high four runs.

The Nittany Lions will host Cazenovia College in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. They will join softball, men's tennis, and women's tennis in hosting a Pink Game fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
