Faust helps Nittany Lions salvage split with Lancaster Bible

READING, PA (April 6, 2013) - Clint Faust's late heroics in game two helped lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to an 8-7 win over Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers started off the day with a 7-5 victory in the opener.

The Nittany Lions (5-14, 1-1 NEAC) entered the bottom of the seventh inning deadlocked at 7-7 in the second game. With one out, Faust unloaded a deep fly to right center field that skipped off the glove of the diving center fielder and led to a triple. On the first pitch to NICK VITELLI, the LBC pitcher tossed a wild pitch that easily scored Faust with the game winner.

Christian Marcin was credited with the win after tossing one inning of scoreless relief. Marcin entered the game in the top of the seventh inning after Kody Godsey led off with a double to right center. At that time, the contest was even at 7-all and the Chargers had a runner in scoring position with no outs, but Marcin struck out two batter and got a ground out to work out of the jam.

NICK VITELLI went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI in the second game. The senior shortstop drove in a pair of runs with a single down the left field line in the Nittany Lions three-run fifth inning that put Berks ahead 7-6. Brad Dierolf drove in the other run that inning with a sacrifice fly to left.

Both teams recorded two runs in each of the first two innings by taking advantages of their opponents miscues. In the first inning, Faust reached on an error, stole second and scored on Vitelli's triple to deep center field. Ryan Tantala did his job with a sacrifice fly to plate Vitelli.

In the second inning, Nick Zipay was hit by a pitch and Phil Anderson followed with a double down the right field line. Both came in to score on a throwing error by the third baseman on a sharply hit grounder by Keeanu Erb.

In the opener, Steve Koenig pitched effectively in 5.1 innings, but suffered the loss after a couple of costly errors by his defense.

Dierolf went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Tantala and Faust each drove in a run. Tom Grablewski doubled and scored a run.

Micah McClay tossed a complete-game, scattering 10 hits and striking out two to pick up the mound win for the Chargers. Sean Westerlund recorded two hits and scored a run, while Frank DiFilippo drove in a pair of runs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to SUNYIT for a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 7.
