Baseball splits doubleheader with Abington

JENKINSTOWN, PA (April 27, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team split its NEAC doubleheader with Penn State Abington on the final day of the regular-season on Saturday afternoon. Berks won the opener by a score of 5-3 before dropping the second game, 6-3.

With the split, the Nittany Lions sit at 7-7 and are tied with SUNYIT for the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. The fate of the Nittany Lions playoff hopes will be decided on Sunday when all conference games are finished and tiebreaker factors are resolved.

In the opener, Steve Koenig continued his strong pitching performance by going 6.2 innings and earning the win. The sophomore right-hander surrendered 10 hits, but was able to limit Abington to just three runs. Abington was able to record a hit and reach base on an error to load up the bases with two outs against closer Christian Marcin. The sophomore recorded his second save of the season after forcing a fly out to center field.

Marcin paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Clinton Faust and Ryan Tantala were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the second game, Tantala matched a career-high with four hits and raised his batting average to .406, which leads the team. Nick Vitelli finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Dillon Landrigan recorded a double and scored a run.

Should the Nittany Lions qualify for the postseason, the NEAC Tournament will take place on Friday, May 3 and last until Sunday, May 5.
