Baseball splits on first day of NEAC Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 3, 2013) - Steve Koenig tossed 8.2 solid innings and the Nittany Lions took advantage of five errors to defeat No. 1 seed Gallaudet University in the first round of the NEAC Championship. Berks then suffered a 4-3 setback to Penn State Harrisburg in the second game of the day.

Berks tacked on one run in the first inning and three in the second inning to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Brad Dierolf added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

The Bison battled back with one run in the eighth and plated two in the ninth. With the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, Christian Marcin came in and struck out his first batter to earn the save.

The Nittany Lions held a 3-2 lead over Harrisburg when Ryan Tantala singled home Marcin and Clinton Faust in the top of the third. Harrisburg countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Alex Doyle doubled and represented the tying run.

Berks will face the winner of Penn State Abington and Gallaudet in an elimination game at 1 p.m.
