Late surge pushes baseball past York College

YORK, PA (April 25, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team used a late rally for a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over York (PA) College in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Jaquet Field.

The Nittany Lions (11-21) were outhit 14-7, but starting pitcher John Bonino was able to limit the the damage in his career-high 7.0 innings of work. The crafty left-hander worked out of jams in each of the first two innings, forcing the Spartans (20-19) to leave two runners stranded in each inning. York left nine runners on base against Bonino and 11 throughout the game.

All of the Nittany Lions hits came from 3-4-5 hitters Nick Vitelli (2-for-5), Ryan Tantala (3-for-5), and Tom Grablewski (2-for-3). Vitelli scored two runs, while Tantala drove in two runs and Grablewski added an RBI. Clinton Faust drew a career-high four base on balls and scored two runs.

In the top of the sixth, Faust led off with a walk and Vitelli followed with a single. Grablewski later doubled to scored Faust and Vitelli scored on a RBI groundout by Alex Doyle to make the score 3-2.

The Nittany Lions went to work in the top of the eighth after York pushed its lead to 5-2. Faust again led off with a walk and Vitelli followed with a double to deep center field. Tantala then doubled down the right field line to bring in both runners. Grablewski recorded a bunt single and Doyle walked to load the bases. Brad Dierolf plated Tantala with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing the game at a 5-all tie. Christian Marcin drove in the winning margin when he beat out the relay throw of an attempted 6-4-3 double play.

Mason Mecke recorded the first two outs of the bottom of the eighth before handing the ball over to Marcin. With runners on second and third, Marcin forced the first batter he faced into an inning ending fly out to right. In the ninth inning, Marcin walked the first batter, but got a clutch double play and a fly to right field to earn the save.

Drew Frankenfield went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Spartan offense. Dustin Worthman also recorded three hits for York.

Tantala has tallied three hits in each of the last two games to increase his batting average (.375) by 37 points. Grablewski has also raised his batting average dramatically, going from .235 on April 7 to his current average of .296.
