Baseball drops two to Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 21, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team fell by scores of 7-0 and 6-5 on the road to Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Sunday afternoon.

With the losses, the Nittany Lions (6-6 NEAC) are currently 1.0 game ahead of SUNYIT (5-7 NEAC) for the final spot in the NEAC tournament with two games remaining on the conference schedule. Berks has a doubleheader at Penn State Abington next Saturday, while SUNYIT will travel to Lancaster Bible for a pair of games.

The Bison won in walk-off fashion in the second game after recording three straight singles to seal up the sweep. In the opener, Ryan Rippy silenced the Nittany Lion batters with a one-hit, complete game shutout.

In the second game, Berks put three runs on the board before the Bison even had a chance to bat. Clinton Faust singled to center field to score Dillon Landrigan, who reached on a Gallaudet error earlier in the inning. Nick Vitelli followed with a single and Ryan Tantala drove in Faust with the first of his three hits. The final run of the inning came when the third baseman could not handle a grounder off the bat of Brad Dierolf.

Josh Spayd earned a no-decision after tossing a career-high 6.0 innings. He allowed five runs - two earned - while striking out a personal best three batters.

The Bison were able to gain the lead after scoring four runs in the fifth and sixth inning with the help of three Berks errors in that time.

With the Nittany Lions down to their final out, Alex Doyle came through clutch with a two-run single to center field to tie the game at 5-all. The freshman designated hitter finished with a career-high three hits and two runs batted in.

Christian Marcin struck out the first batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh inning. But Chris Guinn, J.J. Klein, and Ryan Rippy hit successive singles to earn the walk-off victory.

The Nittany Lions will travel to York (Pa.) College for a non-conference single game on Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.
