Kurtz helps Nittany Lions to sweep of Keuka

READING, PA (April 14, 2013) -  After a pair of shutout wins on Saturday, Logan Kurtz tossed a complete-game three hitter in the Nittany Lions 2-1 win over Keuka College in the opener. Berks then slugged 18 hits en route to 14-8 victory in the second game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday.

The Nittany Lions (10-16, 6-2 NEAC) executed perfect small ball play during the sweep by getting on base any way possible, laying down sacrifice bunts, hitting sacrifice flies, and stealing bases. In the two games combined, Berks batters were walked or hit by a pitch five times, recorded six sacrifices, and five stolen bases.

Kurtz enjoyed the finest moment of his young career to earn his first win of the season. The sophomore right-hander pitched a complete-game, three hitter with just one run allowed. The only run Kurtz surrendered came in the opening inning when he issued a walk, back-to-back hit batters, and another walk to force in the run. With bases loaded and only one out, Kurtz forced a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the jam. He also got help with another double play in the second inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error. Kurtz retired 14 of the final 16 batters faced to cap off his career performance.

Christian Marcin led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout to shortstop and reached third on a single by Clinton Faust. Nick Vitelli scored Marcin with a sacrifice fly to right field to even the game at 1-all. The Nittany Lions got their winning run in the second inning when Ryan Tantala doubled to right center and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brad Dierolf. Tantala then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Tom Grablewski.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions scored in each of the first five innings, highlighted by five in the first, four in the second, and three in the fourth. Mason Mecke was credited with the win after three effective innings of relief. The sophomore righty gave up two runs on three hits with one strike out. John Bonino struck out the last two batters of the game to secure the win.

Grablewksi and Dierolf each recorded two hits and three RBI to pace the offense. Vitelli went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Faust matched a single-game career high with four runs scored. Marcin, who finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored, made an acrobatic diving catch in deep center field for the second out of the sixth inning.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilkes University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 16 at 2 p.m.
