Baseball team shuts out Cazenovia in both games of doubleheader

READING, PA (April 13, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team exploded on offense and received phenomenal pitching efforts to lead to a doubleheader sweep of Cazenovia College by scores of 8-0 and 13-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved their overall record to 8-16 and 4-2 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Steve Koenig enjoyed a career day on the pitcher's mound in the opening game with a complete game shutout. The sophomore right-hander limited the opposition to just five hits, while striking out a career-high six batters. Koenig became just the sixth player in program-history to go the distance without allowing a run.

Koenig found himself in trouble in the opening frame after an error and a double put runners on second and third with two outs. But Koenig worked out of the jam by getting a groundout to shortstop. Cazenovia had runners on second and third with two outs again in the top of the third, but Koenig got a strikeout to end the inning.

The Nittany Lions offense was kept silent in the early going against Zach Levanduski, who entered the game with a 1.40 ERA. Berks finally broke through for four runs in the bottom of hte fourth. Ryan Tantala led off with a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. Keeanu Erb plated two runs with a single to right. Erb then stole second base and the catchers throw allowed Kyle Rissmiller to steal home.

Berks scored four more runs again in the sixth inning with an RBI from Tantala and Dillon Landrigan, while Nick Vitelli drove in two runs with a double.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions took advantage of several miscues to build a 10- lead after two innings. Alex Doyle, Tylor Bair, and Erik Lanzner combined on a two-hit shutout. Doyle tossed three innings of one-hit ball and Bair followed with two hitless innings to get the win.

Christian Marcin went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Tom Grablewski and Phil Anderson each drove in two runs.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka College on Sunday, April 14 in an NEAC doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
