Baseball splits twinbill with North Carolina Wesleyan

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 5, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team had four players collected two hits in the Nittany Lions 10-3 win over North Carolina Wesleyan in the opener of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at The Cal Ripken Experience. In the nightcap, Berks battled until the end but found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-2 setback.

Ryan Tantala used his arm and bat to lead the Nittany Lions (2-1) to their win in the opener. The junior right-hander tossed a complete-game gem, scattering seven hits and striking out five batters. After Tantala allowed an RBI single in the first inning to the number 5 hitter, he settled in and did not allow another hit until the leadoff batter in the top of the sixth.

Tantala, Clinton Faust, and Christian Marcin each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Dillon Landrigan also chipped in two hits and recorded a career-high three RBI. Senior Nick Vitelli scored twice and added a run scoring triple in the fourth inning. Alex Doyle, Keeanu Erb, and Tom Grablewski each drove in a run for Berks.

In the nightcap, Faust singled to left field to start a two-out rally with the Nittany Lions trailing by two runs. Josh Spayd followed with an infield single to put the tying runs on the basepath. Mason Mecke worked the count a drove a pitch into the left center gap that looked would have tied the contest, but the Battling Bishops (7-11) centerfielder tracked it down to secure the win.

Spayd put Berks ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth when he beat the throw on a grounder with two outs to score Vitelli. The lead, however, was short lived as North Carolina Wesleyan responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth.

Steve Koenig received the start and went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs. Tylor Bair followed with 1.1 innings of hitless relief.

The Nittany Lions will continue play at The Cal Ripken Experience with a doubleheader against Eastern University tomorrow, beginning at 3 p.m.
