Offense fuels baseball to win in season opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 4, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team pounded out five extra base hits on its way to a 13-8 victory over Mount Aloysius College in the 2013 season opener of The Cal Ripken Experience on Monday afternoon.

Junior first basemen Ryan Tantala showed his power out of the cleanup spot as he accounted for seven of the Nittany Lions runs. He crushed the first home run of his career with a two-run shot over the right field wall in the sixth inning and drove in a run with a double in the in the bottom of the third. Tantala finished the day with four RBI and scored three runs.

Clinton Faust reached base in his first four plate appearances and came around to score all four times. He got Berks on the board in the first half with a double to deep right field, scoring Christian Marcin, who led off the game with a single up the middle. Marcin doubled to lead off the sixth inning and scored when Faust ripped a shot off the glove of the shortstop.

Freshman Tom Grablewski and junior Dillon Landrigan each recorded two hits. Keeanu Erb made his debut with an RBI double to deep left center to score Landrigan in the eighth. The Nittany Lions had nine different players record at least one hit and had five players drive in runs.

Logan Kurtz got the opening day start on the hill for Berks. He settled in after a rocky first inning with two hitless innings. He was lifted in the top of the fifth inning for Erik Lanzner, who got out of jam with back-to-back strikeouts. The freshman righthander earned a victory in his first collegiate appearance with 3.1 innings of relieve. Lefty John Bonino pitched the final inning and secure the Nittany Lions victory.

Berks will continue its spring break trip with a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 5 against North Carolina Wesleyan. First pitch for the opening game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
