Baseball drops a pair of tight games at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA (March 30, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team battled hard all day against DeSales University, but were unable to crack the win column after falling by scores of 10-6 and 9-6 in Saturday afternoon's non-conference doubleheader.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (4-12) plated four runs in the second inning and tacked on two more in the top of the six to gain a 6-5 lead. But the Bulldogs (12-5) broke through with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk away with the win.

Starting pitcher Steve Koenig allowed five runs - three earned - with just four hits surrendered in 4.2 innings. Brad Dierolf went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and one run scored, while Ryan Tantala chipped in two hits and two RBI.

Charles Dennis led the Bulldogs with a pinch hit, bases clearing double in the five run sixth inning. Chris Zampini was credited with the win after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

In the second game, Berks came to life with a four-run rally in the final frame. Christian Marcin tripled with one out and scored when a the first baseman could not handle a grounder off the bat of Tantala. Nick Vitelli, who finished 3-for-3, drove in a run with a single to cut the DeSales lead to 9-4. Chris Alderfer drove in Tantala with a ground out to first base and Kyle Rissmiller recorded an RBI single, but that is as close as the Nittany Lions would get.

Josh Spayd went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host Widener University on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m.
