Nittany Lions drop non-conference battle to Haverford

READING, PA (March 28, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team put up a fight against undefeated Haverford College, but unfortunately found themselves on the losing end of a 7-3 decision on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (4-10) were down 7-0 after the first five innings, but they slow chipped away at the Fords (14-0) lead before running out of time.

Mason Mecke pitched five innings of scoreless relieve. He struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed only three hits. Mecke ran into a bases loaded one-out jam in the top of the sixth inning, but he escaped undamaged with a pair of strike outs.

Elias Manzueta pitched effectively in his first collegiate start on the mound. He tossed four innings, while allowing six earned runs. Manzueta forced 10 fly outs to the 23 batters he faced.

Nick Vitelli finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and double to deep right center field. Berks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Rissmiller reached on an infield single and came around to score on a double down the left field line by Christian Marcin. In the seventh inning, Allen Mendenhall led off with a double down the leftfield line and eventually scored on a passed ball.

The Nittany Lions will travel to DeSales University for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
