Baseball swept by Gettysburg in non-conference tilt

READING, PA (March 24, 2013) - Alex Doyle gave an impressive performance in just his second career collegiate start, but the Penn State Berks offense was held in check during the Nittany Lions 2-0 loss in the opening game of a doubleheader against Gettysburg College on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The second game was a back and forth battle that ended in a 9-6 defeat for Berks.

Doyle went the distance to record the first complete-game of his young career. The freshman right-hander limited the Bullets (11-6) to just five hits, while surrendering two runs, one earned. Doyle kept his infield busy all day by forcing Gettysburg into 14 groundouts, five of which were handled by second baseman Keeanu Erb.

Unfortunately for the Nittany Lions (4-9), Eric Hungerford was just as brilliant on the mound. He tossed a complete-game, shutout with seven strikeouts to earn the win.

Kyle Rissmiller led the offense with two hits, while Nick Vitelli, Ryan Tantala, Tom Grablewski, and Dillon Landrigan each recorded on hit.

In the second game, Berks used a five-run second inning to go ahead 5-2. Vitelli, who went 3-for-4, drove in a run and Tantala drove in two more to cap the scoring in the second inning.

Luke Lawrence was able to quiet the Nittany Lions with 5.1 innings of effect relieve to pick up the victory.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Ursinus College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, March 26.
