Nittany Lions split doubleheader with Susquehanna

READING, PA (March 23, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team was fueled by a three-run third inning en route to a 4-3 victory in the first game, but they could not manage the sweep as Susquehanna University took game two by a score of 5-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday at Hintz Athletic Field.

In the opener, Ryan Tantala tossed a complete-game to improve his record to 2-1. He surrendered three runs - only one earned - while scattering nine hits. In the second inning, the Crusaders had a leadoff single and the following batter had an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. With a runner on second and no outs, Tantala forced a pop out and groundout before a single put runners on the corners. The junior right-hander worked out of the jam by getting a fly out to center.

Christian Marcin got the offense rolling with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Clinton Faust hit a sharp grounder that the shortstop could not handle, allowing Marcin to score from second base and tie the game. Nick Vitelli drove Faust home with a double to right field. Tantala helped his own cause with a single down the right field line to score Vitelli.

After the Crusaders scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to tie up the score at 3-all, Faust went to work to get Berks back on top. Faust reached on an infield single then stole second and third base in the bottom of the fifth. He scored with ease as Vitelli drilled a one hopper off the fence in left centerfield to give the Nittany Lions the winning margin.

In the second game, Nick Zipay provided the bulk of the offensive output with two hits and an RBI. Erik Lanzner pitched 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run on two hits.

The Nittany Lions will host Gettysburg College in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
