Baseball rally comes up short against Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, PA (March 20, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team rallied with six runs in the top of the ninth, but came up just short in an 9-7 loss to Muhlenberg College on Wednesday afternoon.

Steve Koenig got the start and was very effective during his career-high seven innings of work. The sophomore right-hander scattered six hits, while allowing four runs and keeping the Nittany Lions (3-6) in striking distance.

The Muhls (10-3) tacked on five runs - four earned - in the bottom of the eighth to give what they though was a comfortable eight run lead.

But the Nittany Lions, however, did not go away quietly as they recorded six hits and took advantage of three Muhlenberg errors to make the game interesting. Mason Mecke and Nick Zipay each singled to lead off the inning. Mecke came around to score during a throwing error by the right fielder on a fly out. Brad Dierolf followed with a pinch hit single and Brian Scharnitz then delivered an RBI single. Tom Grablewski reached base on a throwing error and plated another run to make the score 9-4.

Christian Marcin added an RBI single and scored along with Grablewski on a Ryan Tantala double. With the score now 9-7, the Muhls escaped a huge collapse with a pair of strikeouts to secure the win.

Kyle Rissmiller went 3-for-4 with a double, while Marcin and Tantala each finished 2-for-5.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Susquehanna University for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 beginning at 1 p.m.
