Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nittany Lions comeback bid comes up short

ABINGTON, PA (February 6, 2013) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team could have packed it up after trailing by as much as 20 points with a little under seven minutes remaining in the game. But the hard fighting Nittany Lions decided to battle back and were one basket away from tying the contest through the final minute of play. Unfortunately for Berks, they found themselves on the losing end of an 108-104 decision in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions (10-11, 8-3 NEAC) used a 14-2 run late in the second half to pull within two points with 3:19 to go in the game. Abington then went back out in front by a 10 point margin 1:11 left, but the resilient Berks squad pulled back to a three point deficit numerous times in the final 20 seconds.

Dontez Reid led the Nittany Lions with 20 points after shooting a career-best 8-for-10 from the floor. Dameon Nixon tallied 16 of his 19 points in the second half, while Tom Smith followed with 18 points on the night. Darren Major chipped in 17 points behind the strong shooting of four 3-pointers from beyond the arc.  Jeff Schmidt tallied nine points and matched a career-high with five blocked shots. He also recorded seven rebounds.

Smith pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds to notch his third double-double of the season.

Mike Colacci poured in 31 points for Abington after going 4-for-6 from long distance. Sophomore forward Mike Marvin added 27 points and 17 rebounds, while Max Alton chipped in 18 points.

Berks recorded a school-record for most points in a half with 77 scored after the intermission. They shot 28-of-46 from the floor and were 7-of-14 from 3-point range in the second half. The Nittany Lions also converted on 14 of their 17 trips to the foul line in the second half.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a NEAC South Division contest on Wednesday, February 13 at 8 p.m.
