Major keys Nittany Lions to win over Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA (February 13, 2013) - Darren Major poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to a crucial 97-90 win over Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Wednesday evening. (Boxscore)

With the victory, the Nittany Lions (11-11, 10-3 NEAC) remain half a game back of division leading Penn State Abington in the South Division and secured at least second place in the standings. Harrisburg, who fell to 10-14 overall and 7-6 in the conference, holds just a one-game lead over Gallaudet University for third place.

Berks' high powered offense picked up where it left off last Wednesday when they scored 77 points in the second half in a loss to Abington. The Nittany Lions led 41-35 at halftime, but found themselves down one point with 12:51 left in regulation. The deficit was short lived, as a tip-in by Jeff Schmidt put Berks ahead for good.

Major, who shot 8-for-11 on the day, recorded 14 of his points in the second half. He finished the game with three of the teams' seven 3-pointers. Major also had a season-best seven rebounds and matched his personal-high in steals (3) and assists (2).

Tom Smith was vital in the Nittany Lions winning effort, scoring 16 of his 22 points in the second half. The junior forward shot 8-for-11 (.727%) from the floor and was 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Smith registered seven rebounds and three assists.

Dontez Reid chipped in 14 points and a team-high six assists, while Schmidt added 13 points and nine boards. Schmidt became the single-season record holder for assists after he raised his total to 97. Dameon Nixon played 38 solid minutes for the Nittany Lions, recording 12 points, six assists, five assists, and three steals.

William Doyle knocked down seven 3-pointers and led all scorers with 26 points. Alberto De Los Santos followed with 14 points, while Arick Sodini and Thristan Lundy each added 10.

This is the third straight season the two teams split the season series as Harrisburg was an 84-78 winner in December. Berks picked up its 11th win, matching the 2012-13 squad for most victories in a season since becoming an NCAA Division III institution.

Berks will host Lancaster Bible College on Friday, February 15 at 8 p.m. in Beaver Community Center in the last regular-season home game of the season. Connor Hough, Reid, and Schmidt will be honored with Senior Day festivities prior to the start of the game. The men's and women's teams will also host a Pink Game to raise breast cancer awareness.
