Men's basketball pulls out gritty comeback win over Lancaster Bible

READING, PA (February 15, 2013) - Dameon Nixon hit a game winning jumper to cap off an impressive comeback effort in the Penn State Berks men's basketball teams 72-70 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Friday evening at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions set the single-season school record for most wins (12), most conference wins (10) since becoming an NCAA Division. The win also marks the furthest into a season that the Nittany Lions have been above .500 as their record shifts to 12-11 overall and 10-3 in the NEAC.

The Chargers (4-21, 3-11 NEAC) scored the first nine points of the game and took a 44-29 lead into the break. It was not looking good for the Nittany Lions as they were facing a 19 point deficit with 17:43 remaining in the contest. But the Nittany Lions, as they have done all season long, kept on fighting and were able to chip away at Lancaster Bible lead.

Berks had different players score during 25-8 run that cut the Chargers lead to just two points (56-54) with 8:43 to go. LBC padded its lead back up to nine points before the Nittany Lions put in one last push over the final 6:20 of the game. A foul shot by Tom Smith gave Berks a 64-63 advantage, giving them the lead for the first time of the day.

A 3-pointer by C.J. Dunston with :08 left made it appear that overtime was coming. But Nixon took the inbound pass, raced coast to coast and hit a short jumper to put the 244 fans in attendance into a frenzy. The home crowd was finally able to celebrate the hard earned victory when Kurt Keltner's 3-pointer bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.

Jeff Schmidt, who had two vicious dunks during one of the Nittany Lions second half runs, finished with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. He pulled down seven rebounds and recorded three assists, two blocked shots, and two steals.

Smith followed with 16 points – 11 coming in the second half – and recorded eight boards. Nixon netted 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds, while Dontez Reid chipped in 10 points.

After the Chargers shot 64.3% from the floor and were 7-of-10 from 3-point range, Berks head coach Scott Yarnell made some defensive adjustments that paid off big time. Following the intermission, LBC shot 33.3% from the floor and were only 3-of-10 from long distance.

Keltner led the Chargers with 19 points and Dan Karl added 18.

In addition to the excitement taking place during the game, the Nittany Lions were hosting Senior Night and a Pink Game fundraiser. Prior to tip-off, the Nittany Lions honored Schmidt, Reid, and Connor Hough for their stellar careers at Penn State Berks.

The fundraising effort brought in $481.38 with the help of donations at the door and a half-court contest. All proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County, a non-profit organization that provides hope, information, and emotional support to women diagnosed with breast cancer and those who care for and about them. The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a NEAC Southern Division contest at Gallaudet University on Saturday, February 16 at 2 p.m. The Nittany Lions finish first in the South Division with a win and a Penn State Abington loss. If Abington wins or Berks loses the season finale, Abington will finish in first place.
