Stewart's overtime goal sends Nittany Lions to NEAC Championship

READING, PA (November 9, 2013) - Simone Stewart headed a cross from Jen Kessler into the top near corner in the 95th minute to give Penn State Berks a thrilling 1-0 win over Keuka College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Semifinal contest on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (15-3-1), who have set the school record for wins in a single-season, will advance to the conference title round for the second straight season. Penn State Abington will be the other team in the title game after they defeated Lancaster Bible College by a 1-0 margin.

The winning play was started when Dana Sarcinello was fouled from behind and awarded a free kick from just beyond the 18-yard mark. Sarcinello's kick was blocked by the Storm (9-6-1) and bounced out wide to the right side of box. Kessler rushed over to the loose ball and sent a cross in front of the keeper that Stewart was able to head into the cage to send her teammates and the home fans into an outburst of excitement.

Berks had scoring chances throughout the contest, but the Storm received a solid performance from their defensive unit. Goalkeeper Ashley Swarts also gave a great effort as she recorded 15 saves on the day.

Keuka also received some help in the first half with a shot by Sarcinello hitting the crossbar and chip by Kristin Starke bouncing off the post. Starke had a shot on goal from about 25-yards out that Swarts made a terrific leaping save on. In the second half, Katie Warner inserted a corner kick that Morgan Shade then sent a line drive into the crossbar.

Savannah Cramer finished the contest with four saves to record her second shutout of the season. She was aided in limiting the Storm attack by the strong play from Melissa Bennett, Emily Rumpf, Warner, and Mummau.

The Nittany Lions outshot Keuka 33-7 (16-4 in shots on goal) and held an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks. Stewart finished the contest with seven shots on goal, but all that mattered was her final shot that happened at 94 minutes and six seconds.

The NEAC Championship contest between Berks and Abington will be played Sunday, November 10 at 1 p.m. with the winner earning a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
