Women's soccer wins first ever NEAC Championship

READING, PA (November 10, 2013) - Simone Stewart recorded a hat trick to lead the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Penn State Abington on Sunday afternoon to earn the first ever North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in program history. (Boxscore)

Stewart, who scored the in overtime of the quarterfinal, was named the NEAC Tournament MVP after finishing with four goals and two game winners.

The freshman midfielder did not waste any time getting the Nittany Lions (16-3-1) on the scoreboard after netting the first goal at the 9:18 mark of the first half. In the 32nd minute, Emily Rumpf sent a free kick deep into Abington territory that Stewart then chipped over the keepers head. Stewart then gave the Nittany Lions a comfortable cushion after Lizzie Mummau delivered a pass through traffic to Stewart who then dribbled by the keeper and knocked a line drive into the wide open net.

Mummau finished off the scoring with at goal in the 81st minute with Taylor Schwartz providing the assist.

The Nittany Lions created a lot of scoring opportunities throughout the contest. Dana Sarcinello kept possession at midfield with her great footwork and connecting on passes to the forwards. Jen Kessler and Ellie McKinstry were solid on the offensive and defensive parts of the field. Cristen French and Steph Martin made a couple of strong runs that helped set up scoring plays.

The defensive play Melissa Bennett, Rumpf, Katie Warner and Mummau shut down the Abington attack and only allowed three shots on goal. Kristin Starke and Morgan Shade came off the bench to add a spark to the already solid defensive unit.

Savannah Cramer made three saves - all in the second half - and split the shutout with Sarah Elmontacir.

With the victory, the Nittany Lions earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They will find out their opponent and the site of the match on Monday, November 11 in the tournament selection show.
