Women's volleyball sweeps Chargers in tournament opener

READING, PA (November 5, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep over Lancaster Bible College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Quarterfinal round on Tuesday evening at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (17-12) defeated Lancaster Bible three times this since, the most recent coming by set scores of 25-22, 25-9, 25-18. The victory sends Berks into the NEAC Semifinal round this weekend where they will face tournament host Gallaudet University.

Sophia Zhang, who was named the NEAC Rookie of the Year earlier in the day, led the Nittany Lions with a contest-high 15 kills and had a .324 hitting percentage. Even more impressive was Cassidy Schultz who recorded 10 kills without committing an error on 27 attempts to finish with a .370 hitting percentage. Schultz, who was an all-conference third team selection, chipped in 15 digs to record her eighth double-double of the season. Colby Jones had eight kills, eight digs, and four service aces.

Morgan Buterbaugh proved why the conference selected her as the Defensive Player of the Year with another strong performance. The sophomore libero finished the contests with 26 digs which was a contest high. Buterbaugh flew all around the court making acrobatic dives and rolls to keep play alive for the Nittany Lions. Sarah Winton followed Buterbaugh with 15 digs and the Nittany Lions compiled 72 throughout the match.

Jordan Heath handed out 30 assists to raise her season total to 926. Maria Pavone finished the contest with two service aces, one solo block and two block assists.

The Nittany Lions will square off against Gallaudet on Saturday, November 9 at 5 p.m. The winner of that semifinal match will play the winner of Keuka College and SUNYIT in the championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
