Women’s volleyball falls in semifinal to Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 9, 2013) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team saw its 2013 season come to a close after dropping a 3-1 decision to Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference Semifinal contest on Saturday afternoon.

For the second straight season the Nittany Lions (17-13) ended their season in the semifinals of the NEAC Championship. Berks took the first game by a 25-20 margin, but dropped the next three by scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-7.

Sophia Zhang led the Nittany Lions with 12 kills, followed by Heleanna Davison who matched a career-high with nine kills. Cassidy Schultz finished the contest with eight kills and 16 digs. Morgan Buterbaugh recorded a team-high 19 digs and Colby Jones picked up 15. Jordan Heath handed out 29 assists.

The Nittany Lions have a lot of positives to look back on from the 2013 season. Zhang set the single-season school record with 417 kills, while Buterbaugh is the all-time leader in digs with 734 and ranks second in the nation in digs per set. Zhang was named the NEAC Rookie of the Year and selected to the All-NEAC First team and Buterbaugh was selected NEAC Defensive Player of the Year and earned second team honors.
