Nittany Lions drop heartbreaker to TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (November 16, 2013) – The Penn State Berks women's soccer team gave everything they had in the program's first ever trip to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. After a scoreless first half, The College of New Jersey scored a goal just out of the break en route to a 2-0 victory. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (16-4-1) were able to generate a few scoring opportunities against the No. 15 team in the nation, but were not able to finish the play. The Lions (17-2-2) held a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-1 margin on corner kicks.

Savannah Cramer recorded eight saves to raise her season total to 61. The junior goalkeeper finished the season with a 0.92 goals against average and combined on 11 shutouts with Sarah Elmontacir.

Melissa Bennett turned in one of her finest defensive performances of the season. The junior center back was able to handle one-on-one attacks throughout the contest and was able to alter the shot selection of the opposition. In addition, Bennett sent some passes over the midfield that created some scoring chances for Berks.

Dana Sarcinello and Simone Stewart, who finished for the team lead with 18 goals, got a shot off on net but goalkeeper Kendra Griffith made the stop on both. Stewart and Cristen French pushed into Lion territory, but the defensive unit was able to keep them off the board.

Lizzie Mummau, Katie Warner, and Emily Rumpf joined Bennett in trying to quiet the Lion offense, which has tallied 63 goals this season. Taylor Schwartz and Ellie McKinstry continued their strong play in the midfield.

Sarah Marion broke the scoreless tie with a perfectly located shot that went just under the cross bar and into the back, far corner in the 48th minute. The Lions tacked on an insurance goal when Christine Levering sent a one-timer into the net from Katie Lindacher.

The future looks bright for the Nittany Lions who have a roster that has seven freshman, four sophomores, and four juniors.
