Second half surge powers Nittany Lions to win

READING, PA (October 6, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over Morrisville State College to remain unbeaten in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) on Sunday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions improved to 10-2-1 overall and 8-0 in the conference, while the Mustangs fall to 7-4 on the season and 5-2 in the NEAC. It is just the fourth time in program history that Berks has reached double-digit victories in a season.

Berks had six shots by the 16:44 mark of the first half, but they either trickled just wide of goal, sail over the crossbar or were stopped by Angela Marriott. The Mustangs were able to transition and take advantage of a breakdown by the Berks defense for a goal by Krista Baxter in the 18th minute. The contest remained 1-0 in favor of Morrisville State heading into halftime.

The Nittany Lions did not waste any time evening up the contest with a goal by Taylor Schwartz just one minute and 40 seconds into the second half. The play was set up with a nice pass by Dana Sarcinello. Berks was given a free kick around midfield after a Mustang foul in the 55th minute. Emily Rumpf chipped a perfect pass in front of the net and Lizzie Mummau headed it over the keeper's head to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead.

Sarcinello nearly tacked on a few more goals for the Nittany Lions, but had some unlucky breaks go against her. The freshman midfielder hit the post for the straight day and also had a shot bounce off the post. Sarcinello ripped a shot from just inside the box that the keeper deflected into the crossbar. Simone Stewart was unable to catch any breaks as well. She had a number of shots go just wide of the goal and deflected a shot out of midair, but Marriot was positioned perfectly to make the save. Mummau had another header that appeared to be going into net, but the keeper made a diving save.

Savannah Cramer finished the contest with three saves, while Marriott had 15 stops. The Nittany Lions outshot Morrisville State by a 36-7 margin and held a 16-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Moravian College for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, October 9 at 4 p.m.
