Nittany Lions sweep a pair of NEAC contests



READING, PA (October 4, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) south division pool play with a 3-0 victory against Lancaster Bible College, followed by a 3-1 triumph over Penn State Abington on Friday evening at Beaver Community Center. The Nittany Lions improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference. They won by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-19 against the Chargers (7-14, 2-3 NEAC) and 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-10 against Abington (8-15, 3-2 NEAC).

Sophia Zhang completed the day with 35 kills, four errors, and 77 total attacks for a .403 hitting percentage. The freshman outside hitter had a contest-high 19 kills against Abington and led all players with 16 kills against Lancaster Bible.

In the opener, Maria Pavone recorded a season-high nine kills and finished with a .467 hitting percentage. Colby Jones and Heleanna Davison each added six kills in the first game. Morgan Buterbaugh compiled 30 dilgs, while Cassidy Schultz picked up 14. Jordan Heath handed out 39 assists and also registered 10 digs. Sarah Winton had a career-high six aces in the opener.

In the second game, Jones had five of the Nittany Lions eight service aces. Buterbaugh had 23 digs, followed by Schutlz (17) and Jones (13). Heath handed out 36 assists and added five digs. Kaila Gonzalez recorded a block assist and a solo block.

The Nittany Lions will host the second day of NEAC pool play tomorrow against Gallaudet University at 10 a.m. They will wrap up the weekend against the College of Saint Elizabeth at 2 p.m.
