Nittany Lions sweep Alvernia in Dig Pink game

READING, PA (October 24, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team defeated Alvernia University, 3-0, in a Dig Pink game on Thursday evening at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions wore pink jerseys and ribbons in their hair to help show their support for breast cancer awareness. Donations were collected at the entrance and also in a serving contest that took place between the second and third game. The event raised $150 and a final collection of donations made on campus will be collected at the end of the week. All of proceeds will benefit the Side-Out Foundation. Berks won by game scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 to earn its third straight victory and improve to 14-11 on the season.

The Nittany Lions offensive attack was in fine form this evening, recording 35 kills and just four errors on 88 attempts for a very efficient .352 hitting percentage. Sophia Zhang led the way with a contest-high 17 kills and only two errors on 41 attempts to finish with a .417 hitting percentage. The freshman outside hitter has compiled 348 kills, which is just 39 shy of the single-season school record set by Amy Shelton in 2010.

Cassidy Schultz and Heleanna Davison each chipped in five kills and Maria Pavone followed with four of her own. Colby Jones and Sarah Winton each recorded three service aces. Jordan Heath handed out 33 assists and Morgan Buterbaugh racked up 16, which were both game-highs for their respective categories.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lebanon Valley College for a tri-match on Saturday, October 26. They will face the Dutchmen at 11 a.m. and then Misericordia College at 1 p.m.
