Nittany Lions cruise to win over Hazleton

READING, PA (October 17, 2013) - Michael Peguero recorded a pair of goals and four others found the back of the net as the Penn State Berks men's soccer team rolled to a 6-1 win over Penn State Hazleton in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions picked up their second straight victory after defeating Valley Forge Christian College on Monday.

Jose Ceballo got Berks on the board at the 19:45 mark with his first goal of the season. Hazleton was able to even the contest in the 41st minute when Abbas Mehdi sent a loose ball through the right side.

Justin Bass appeared to have a goal when he headed a corner kick on goal, but a Hazleton defender caught the ball and was given a red card. Bass was awarded with a penalty kick which he converted by beating the keeper through the left side.

Peguero then gave the Nittany Lions a comfortable lead by scoring the next two goals. He tallied his first goal of the season with a line drive that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into net. Justin Dantas provided the assist on the play. In the 76th minute, Bass chipped a ball over the defense and Peguero ripped a shot past the keeper into the top far corner.

Dantas also recorded the assist on a goal by Isaiah Danner and the freshman defender finished off his fine day by scoring the Nittany Lions final goal at the 86:50 mark of the match. Dantas and Peguero each recorded a career-high four points.

Darrell Geisinger made two saves in net to record the win. He now has 93 saves on the season, which is second in the conference to Cazenovia's Andrew Schultz (94).

Berks outshot Hazleton by a 35-10 margin and held a 14-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday, October 19 at 1 p.m. The men's and women's teams will be sponsoring a Pink Game fundraiser which will benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
