Women's basketball puts scare into Keuka

READING, PA (January 6, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team had four players finish in double figures and fought hard until the final whistle, but Keuka College was able to hold on for a 72-66 victory on Sunday afternoon at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (2-8, 1-3 NEAC) led by as many was 11 points in the first half half and were up by three with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. But the NEAC North Division leading Storm (6-1, 3-0 NEAC) shot 9-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line during the final 9:29 of the game to earn the victory.

Kellie Wilson knocked down at 3-pointer and after a Keuka turnover, Shanelle Koch added a layup to make  it a 68-64 lead with 33 seconds remaining. Danielle Gravel put the Storm back up by six, but Koch answered right back with another layup to make it a four point game with 22 seconds left. The upset bid ended there as Keuka hit two free throws and forced Berks into a missed 3-pointer.

Wilson led the Nittany Lions with her career-high 20 points, marking the sixth straight game in which she reached double digits. During that span, Wilson raised her average from 2.0 to 10.2 points per game. The junior guard shot 6-for-11 from the floor and converted on all six of her trips to the charity stripe.

Koch, playing in her second contest for the Nittany Lions, followed Wilson with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Keisha Robinson had a huge game with 13 points, eight steals, seven rebounds, and three assists. Sherrie Satchel rounded out the Berks scorers in double figures with 11 points. Satchel tied Jamie Norris' single-game school record of six blocks. Norris set the record on February 12, 2011, also against Keuka College.

The Storm received 55 of their points from Gravel (20 points), Jessica Bandrowski (18 points), and Mariah Mouzon (17 points). Mouzon finished with a double-double after grabbing a contest-high 14 boards. Brittany Hadley chipped in 10 points for Keuka.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the College of Saint Elizabeth for an NEAC South Division contest on Wednesday, January 9 at 7 p.m.
