Men's basketball wins thriller over Keuka College

READING, PA (January 6, 2013) - Tom Smith put on a clutch performance down the stretch to help lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to a 63-58 victory over Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) battle on Sunday afternoon at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

Smith grabbed an offensive rebounded and went back up with a lay-in to even the contest at 48-all with 5:40 left in regulation. He put the Nittany Lions (4-8, 3-1 NEAC) ahead for good on the very next possession with another layup. Smith knocked down two free throws with 36 seconds left to give Berks some breathing room.

The Storm (3-7, 2-1 NEAC) made things excited when they pulled to within two points with 26 seconds to go. Mike Porter responded with a pair of clutch free throws, but Keuka cut that lead down to two with 16 seconds left. Freshman Evan Belczyk stepped up and converted a pair of shots at the charity stripe.

Smith finished with a contest-high 16 points and six steals, while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Jeff Schmidt, who was honored before the game after becoming the career-leader at Berks in rebounds, recorded 10 points, 11 boards, and four blocked shots.

The Nittany Lion bench outscored Keuka by a 23-11 margin behind the solid play of Belczyk (9 points), Darren Major (8 points), and Connor Hough (6 points). Berks was also helped by a 17-for-26 showing at the foul line, compared to just 2-for-8 by the Storm.

Teddy Tuggles, who entered the contest with a team-high 12.8 points per game, was held to just seven points by the strong zone defense of Berks. Jared Wagner scored 15 points - all coming off of 3's - and recorded three steals and three assists. Conor Boyer recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Healey had a contest-high 15 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions return to action on Sunday, January 13 in a NEAC crossover contest at SUNY Cobleskill. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
