Men's basketball picks up fourth straight win

COBLESKILL, N.Y. (January 13, 2013) - Jeff Schmidt's layup with 11:36 remaining in regulation was the only lead change of the game in the Penn State Berks 72-66 win in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover contest at SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday evening. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions won their fourth consecutive contest and the fifth time in six games to improve to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in the NEAC. It did not always look favorable for Berks, who trailed 33-27 at halftime and were down by as many as eight points in the second half. The Fighting Tigers (3-10, 1-3 NEAC) saw their lead diminish over a four minute stretch where Mike Porter recorded all eight of his points to make it a 43-42 margin in Cobleskill's favor.

Tyrone Mitchell followed a jumper by Porter that gave the Fighting Tigers a three point cushion, but sophomore Jim Wagner knocked down one of his four 3-pointers to tie the contest for the first time since 0-0 with 12:02 to play. Mitchell missed the backend of his two shots at the foul line and Schmidt followed with the go-ahead layup on the ensuing possession.

Berks built on that lead and were up by nine points with 7:36 left, but that margin was lowered to one points with 4:36 to play. Again, the Nittany Lions padded their lead and were able to hold off a final comeback push by Cobleskill.

Tom Smith finished with a contest-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. He scored 10 of those points in the second half, seven of which came in the final eight minutes. Wagner had a career-high 14 points after shooting 4-for-6 from long distance. Wagner's effort played a large part in the Nittany Lions 25-11 advantage on points off the bench. For the second straight game, Schmidt recorded a double-double after his 12 point and 14 rebound effort. In addition, Schmidt had a team-best six assists and a career-high five blocked shots.

Dontez Reid had seven points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Darren Major also chipped in seven points.

Alexis Nunez led the Fighting Tigers with 16 points and six assists, followed by Mitchell with 11 points and 11 boards. Mike Marcelin added 13 points to round out the scorers in double figures.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC South Division tilt on Wednesday, January 16 at 8 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
