Nittany Lions return to action with win over Wells



READING, PA (January 4, 2013) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team returned from a 22-day layoff with a 77-64 victory over Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday evening at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (3-8, 2-1 NEAC) won their second straight game and third time in four games. Wells fell to 5-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Dontez Reid drilled a 3-pointer to give Berks a 28-26 lead with 5:09 remaining in the first half. The Nittany Lions never trailed from that point on, although the Express were able to even the match 36-all early in the second half.

Senior forward Jeff Schmidt established himself as the career leader in rebounds at Berks after grabbing a board with 15:25 remaining in the second half. He finished the contest with 10 rebounds to raise his career total to 435. Mark Fowler, who notched 430 rebounds while playing from 2006-09, was the previous record holder.

Schmidt also added nine points, six rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots.

Tom Smith led the Nittany Lions with 15 points, followed by Dameon Nixon (14 points) and Evan Belczyk (10 points). Reid chipped in nine points and handed out a contest-high eight assists.

E.J. Taylor led the Express with 18 points, followed by Jordan Bishop (13 points) and Ryan Hood (11 points).

Berks won the battle of the boards by a 32-31 margin and held a 44-34 advantage with points scored in the paint. The difference maker in the game was the Nittany Lion bench outscoring Wells by a 27-14 margin.

Keuka College, who currently sits atop the NEAC North standings, will visit the Nittany Lions on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
