Nittany Lions drop road battle to Stevenson University

OWINGS MILL, MD (January 28, 2013) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered an 84-79 loss to Stevenson University in a non-conference contest on Monday evening at Owings Mill Gymnasium. (Boxscore)

The opening half was a seesaw battle, with both teams giving up double-digit leads. Berks raced out to a 14 point lead with 11:45 to go until halftime, but the Mustangs (11-8) fought back and built an 11 point cushion with 1:51 left in the half. The Nittany Lions were able to cut the deficit to 47-43 going into the second half.

Stevenson went up by 13 points early in the second half, but the resilient Nittany Lions pulled to within three points with just over nine minutes to play. Unfortunately, that is as close as Berks would get the rest of the way.

Dameon Nixon and Darren Major led the Nittany Lions with 16 points apiece, followed by Tom Smith with 15. Jeff Schmidt recorded his second straight double-double after chipping in 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Porter rounded out the Nittany Lions in double figures with a 10 point effort. Dontez Reid added eight points and a team-high four assists.

Alfonzo Hawkins poured in a contest-high 24 points on a 11-of-16 shooting from the floor. Brett Burrier chipped in 17 points and Christian Roberts followed with 16.

Berks shot 55.4% from the floor, 6-of-11 from 3-point range and were 11-for-13 at the foul line, all of which were better numbers than the Mustangs. The difference in the game was the Nittany Lions 24 turnovers, compared to 18 by Stevenson.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Cairn University (formerly Philadelphia Biblical College) for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, January 30 at 8 p.m.
