Nittany Lions fend off Cairn for non-conference win

LANGHORNE, PA (January 30, 2013) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team had four players score in double figures in an 84-72 victory over Cairn University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions inched closer to .500 on the season, as they now sit at 9-10 overall. They move to 4-3 all-time against the Highlanders, who used to be in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) when they were Philadelphia Biblical College.

Berks took a 43-32 lead into the break after shooting 55.9% from the floor. The Highlanders came out strong in the second half and eventually took a three point lead with 14:23 remaining in the game. A layup by Dameon Nixon cut the deficit to 52-51 and Dontez Reid put the Nittany Lions ahead for good with a 3-pointer.

Jeff Schmidt had a team-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. He also recorded a team-high eight rebounds and four assists. Dameon Nixon followed with 15 points and a contest-high five steals. Dontez Reid chipped in 14 points and Darren Major finished with 12.

The Highlanders had a game-high 18 points from Charles Hopkins, while Aaron Stovall added 17 and Reuben Lacy had 15. Reuben Lacy and Barron Lacy tied for the game-high in rebounds with 11.

The Nittany Lions, who finished a five-game road trip with a 3-2 record, will return to Beaver Community Center on Saturday, February 2 in a NEAC crossover contest with SUNY Institute of Technology.
