Nittany Lions bounce back from loss, down Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, PA (January 26, 2013) - After having a six-game winning streak snapped last Sunday, the Penn State Berks men's basketball team rebounded with a 71-62 victory over Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Saturday afternoon at Horst Athletic Center. The Nittany Lions move to 8-9 overall and 7-2 in the NEAC, to extend their division lead to one game ahead of idle Penn State Harrisburg (5-2 NEAC). The Chargers, which have lost the last three meetings to Berks, dropped to 2-16 overall and 2-8 in the conference.

After trailing 10-3 in the early going, the Nittany Lions went on an 18-2 run to jump out to a comfortable lead midway through the first half. The Chargers were able to narrow their deficit to three points at halftime and tied the game at 33-all with a 3-pointer to open the second half. But Dontez Reid responded with a 3-pointer on the next possession and the Nittany Lions would not trail the rest of the way. A layup by Darren Major gave Berks its largest lead of the game at 17 points with 11:29 remaining.

Tom Smith scored a team-high 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Jeff Schmidt recorded his third double-double of the season after scoring 11 points and a contest-high 10 boards. Smith and Schmidt tied for the team lead with five assists. Reid connected on four baskets from beyond the arc to chip in 12 points. Dameon Nixon, Connor Hough, and Major each finished with eight points. Nixon had a game-high five steals and also handed out three assists.

Corey Leonard was the only Charger able to reach double-digits against the Berks defense after finishing with 15 points. Jon Bird and Dondre Perry each recorded nine points and Bird had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will take a break from NEAC play with a pair of non-conference road games coming up this week. On Monday, January 28, Berks will travel to Stevenson University for a 7 p.m. tip off, followed by an 8 p.m. contest at Cairn University on Wednesday, January 30.
