Nittany Lions go on scoring spree in win over Abington

READING, PA (January 16, 2013) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team finished with five players with 10 or more points en route to a season-high point total in its 97-81 victory over Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference South Division contest on Wednesday evening. The Nittany Lions, who have won five straight and six of their last seven contests, jumped out to an 11-point lead early in the first half. But Abington (4-12, 2-3 NEAC) battled back to enter the halftime intermission in a 40-40 tie. Berks scored the first 11 points of the second half and did not allow Abington to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Tom Smith recorded his first double-double of the season after scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Smith shot 8-for-10 from the floor and was 5-of-6 at the free throw line.

Dontez Reid finished the game with 16 points, four assists, and three steals. Reid hit two clutch 3-pointers in the second half when Abington showed signs of starting a rally. Mike Porter scored the first eight points of the game for the Nittany Lions and matched his career-high with 15 points. Jim Wagner and Connor Hough rounded out the Berks scorers in double-digits, with 10 points each.

The Berks offense always seems to come to life when they are going against Abington. The 97 points were the fifth most points scored in school-history and most points since the record-setting 112 against Abington last year. Berks shot 37-for-76 from the floor and recorded 10 3-pointers. Another good sign was their 13-of-16 showing at the foul line, where they entered the game shooting 62.4%.

The contest was also a milestone game for head coach Scott Yarnell, who was coaching in his 500th game at Penn State Berks. Over the course of 20 seasons with the Nittany Lions, Yarnell has compiled an overall record of 266-234.

The Nittany Lions will start their season-long five game road trip this weekend with games at Cazenovia College (Saturday) and Morrisville State College (Sunday).
