Nittany Lions drop nailbiter to King's

READING, PA (September 5, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team received a strong defensive effort on Wednesday afternoon, but the offense was unable to generate any goals as the Nittany Lions fell,1-0, to King's College. (Boxscore)

The lone score of the contest came on a breakaway goal by Erin Laird, which was setup with a long pass from midfield by Shaina Dougherty. Laird took two dribbles and drilled her first goal of the season into the top right corner.

Savannah Cramer turned in a strong effort in goal with nine saves. She also thwarted numerous Monarch scoring chances by coming out of net to block inserts on corner kicks. After two contests, Cramer has compiled 14 saves.

Melissa Bennett kept the Nittany Lions in striking distance with a defensive save late in the second half. In the 70th minute, Laird was on a breakaway and was able to shake past Cramer and get a shot off that was heading just inside the right post. But, lucky for the Nittany Lions, Bennett was in the perfect position to stop the shot and keep deficit at 1-0.

Emily Rumpf missed tying the match by a matter of inches in the start of the second half. From the top, left of the 18 mark, Rumpf aimed her shot in front of the keeper toward the right side. The ball flew past the keeper and sailed into the right post to keep the Monarchs shutout in tact. Steph Tankalavage and Meaghan Daly each had scoring opportunities, but Erin Dempsey was able to make the save on each.

The Nittany Lions will begin North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play this weekend with contests at Wells College (Saturday) and Keuka College (Sunday).
