Conover nets hat trick in Nittany Lions shutout over Wells

AURORA, N.Y. (September 8, 2012) – Sara Conover exploded for three goals to lead the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 5-0 shutout over Wells College in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions were not fazed by the monsoon-like weather as they earned their first victory of the season and started out conference play on a positive note. Berks moved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the NEAC, while the Express fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

After being shutout in the first two games of the season, Conover wasted no time getting Berks on the scoreboard on Saturday. The freshman forward netted her first goal of the game just 20 seconds into the contest.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, Meaghan Daly added her first goal of the season off of a corner kick from Katie Warner. After the halftime intermission, Caitlin Deibler tallied an unassisted goal at the 53:39 mark. A little over one minute later, Conover recorded her second goal of the game. She capped off her brilliant day with yet another unassisted goal, this one coming in the 64th minute of the game.

Savannah Cramer and Sarah Elmontacir combined for the shutout in goal, although neither was tested because of the strong play out of the defense. Cramer made three saves in net, while Elmontacir was left unchallenged.

Wells goalkeeper Ashley Roser recorded nine saves, while Kelly Cornwell had three. Paige Stone and Savannah Tucker each notched two shots for the Express.

The Nittany Lions dominated in all facets of the game, holding a 33-6 advantage in shots and an 8-1 margin on corner kicks.

Berks will visit NEAC foe Keuka College on Saturday, September 9 at 1 p.m.
